Tricolors and Bicolors consist usually of two or three divisions of the field, either horizontally or vertically or in some combination. Made famous by the French and Dutch flags, these basic field divisions account for the vast majority of national flags in the world today. Sometimes they are referred to as having horizontal or vertical stripes (see Stripes, Strips, Bars and Bands).

A flag with three stripes, like Argentina, of two colors is properly a bicolor of three stripes but is often referred to as a tricolor even though there are only two colors.
